El primero es la proliferación del llamado “pez diablo”, pleco o bagre acorazado (Hypostomus plecostomus) en casi todos los cuerpos de agua, incluyendo en río Bravo.
Por otra parte, el carrizo (Phragmites australis), el lirio acuático (Eichornia crassipes), (el pino salado (Tamarix ramosissima) y el hidrilia (Hidrilia fertisilata), compiten con la vegetación nativa.
En el caso de la hidrilia, se ha podido combatir su proliferación gracias a la introducción de tilapia.
Por otra parte, el “pez diablo” es especialmente perjudicial para los ecosistemas acuáticos porque es un depredador natural que se alimenta de los huevecillos de otras especies.
En los afluentes de todo el país y prácticamente de todo el continente, el bagre acorazado es una seria amenaza.
En esta región están en riesgo especies como el bagre común, la carpa, la trucha, la tilapia y el catán.
